As the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, the British Council is committed to making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with. We achieve this through projects in arts, education, society and English; changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust in over 100 countries across the world. Without our people none of this would be possible.
This year we are inviting applications from external candidates for some of the most exciting and demanding senior roles in the organisation. Having the right people in the right places is central to our global recruitment strategy and we strongly believe that with the right skills and experience we can truly help to make the world a better, safer and more prosperous place. We are looking for candidates with a mix of commercial and relationship management skills, who are motivated to help us achieve our strategic aims by providing effective leadership across the spectrum of our work. We would expect successful candidates to embody our organisational values of creativity, integrity, valuing people, mutuality and professionalism and to build a leadership ethos that would support our staff in doing the same.
Working for the British Council offers a unique opportunity to gain experience and develop skills in international cultural relations – as important as ever in today’s ever-evolving geopolitical landscape. We have well over 9,000 members of staff in offices, teaching centres, libraries and information and resource centres worldwide. You will be part of a modern, rapidly changing organisation with worldwide influence and impact in roles that will offer you a scope for versatility, initiative and creativity in a stimulating and supportive environment.
As well as the Country Director roles advertised on this site, we are inviting applications and expressions of interest from candidates with an active interest in working in the South Asia region, notably in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. We foresee a range of senior management opportunities in our country operations becoming available across the region over the coming months. These will require strong programme and project management, team leadership and relevant sector knowledge. We would therefore encourage candidates wishing to pursue a career in these countries to apply. Good luck with your applications and we look forward to finding out more about you and what you have to offer over the next few months.

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.
We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body.
